How to Open an M3U Playlist: M3U Player Guide

· 5 min read

If your IPTV provider gave you an M3U link, the next question is obvious: how do you open it? This article explains what M3U is, how to add it to an M3U player, and which mistakes come up most often. The examples use the free Premium Player.

Premium Player is only a player; it contains no channels, films or series and sells none. You get the M3U link from your own IPTV provider.

What is M3U?

M3U is a simple text file that holds a list of streams. It lists things like a channel's name, its stream address and its category, line by line; open one in a text editor and you can read it. M3U8 is the more widely used UTF-8 version of the same format (it keeps special characters intact), and players open both the same way.

Your provider gives you either a file or, more often, a link. The player reads the list from that link and shows the channels. Links usually start with http and end with get.php or .m3u8.

Important: the link contains your username and password. Do not share it, and check any screenshot before you send it.

How to open an M3U playlist

To open an M3U playlist you need an M3U player. The steps are the same on every device:

  1. Install Premium Player on your device. Options: Android TV and Fire TV, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, or the online IPTV player that needs no installation. All are on the download page.
  2. Open the app and choose Add M3U playlist.
  3. Paste the link your provider gave you. Copying and pasting on a phone or computer is far easier than typing with a remote.
  4. Press Save.
  5. Wait for the list to arrive. Large lists with tens of thousands of channels and films can take a minute or two on a TV. You can keep using the app meanwhile.

Once the list opens, the channels appear sorted into categories. Besides live TV, any films and series in the list show up in the catalogue with posters.

Adding M3U on a TV

Typing a long link with a remote is tiresome. On Android TV, Add with phone (QR) is made for this: the TV shows a QR code and a short code, you paste the link into the form on your phone and send it, and the list arrives on the TV. You can also type the short code at preplay.cc/tv on your phone.

How does the guide (EPG) work with M3U?

Some providers give a separate XMLTV address for the programme guide. If you have one, enter it in the guide field of the app; if not, leave that field empty. With a guide, you get what is on now and next, a day-by-day schedule and reminders for later programmes. If the guide looks off by an hour or two, you can correct the time shift in the app's guide settings.

M3U or Xtream Codes?

If your provider offers both: M3U is a single link, and the list is read from it. Xtream Codes is three pieces of information, a server address, a username and a password, and the player fetches the channels, films, series and often the guide by itself. If you have Xtream Codes details, see IPTV setup with Xtream Codes.

Common M3U mistakes

  • The link was copied incompletely. Links can be very long; make sure there is no trailing space or cut-off part.
  • The list comes up empty. Your subscription may have expired, or the link may be wrong. Get the link again from your provider's panel.
  • Watching on two devices with one account. Most providers do not allow one account on several devices at once. Premium Player uses a single connection to protect your connection count.
  • It will not open in the browser. Some providers do not allow connections from a browser; the web player notices this and tells you. Then add the same link to an app. If the link starts with http://, the PrePlay HTTP Bridge extension can help you open it in the browser.
  • It does not work in a private window. The web player keeps lists in the browser's storage, so it cannot be used in a private window.

What if you have no list?

To try the interface, Take a look first opens a demo list of made-up channels, films and series; you do not need to enter anything. You add your own list later. Premium Player does not recommend lists or tell you where to find them: you get your link only from your own IPTV provider.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between M3U and M3U8?

M3U8 is the UTF-8 version of the M3U format. Players open both the same way; add whichever your link ends with.

Is an M3U player free?

Premium Player is free and needs no account. What you pay your provider for the streaming service is between you and the provider.

Can I open an M3U playlist on my phone?

Yes. On Android, install the app and add the link. On iPhone and iPad you can use the web player in Safari today; the App Store version is in preparation. See how to watch IPTV on your phone for details.

Can I add more than one M3U list?

Yes. You can add as many M3U lists and Xtream Codes sources as you like; search and favourites work across all of them.
